Your Turn / A Humble Suggestion
February 23, 2018, 04:58:13 PM
I really love this forum.

Since I discovered it back in my seminary days, it has often served as an intellectual and spiritual oasis for me--a place to go and discuss issues of all sorts with thoughtful and intelligent folks. Over the years, a great many of these thoughtful folks have departed, for various reasons. Some have formally declared these reasons, which need not be rehashed here. Some still lurk and post occasionally, and for that I am grateful. I know I miss their voices and their absence, and I am reasonably certain that others here do as well.

It is the nature of online discussion forums to get a little hot and heavy at times, and this one is no exception. In general, I think this is a good and healthy thing. I want to hear strong, principled reasoning and debate. I want people to step up and passionately argue their opinions and positions; "iron sharpens iron," and all that. This is one of the things that attracted me to this place. I like it when we "go to to the mat," and then get up and shake hands.

All that being said, the level of trollitude being exhibited by certain folks these days seems to be approaching the level of a few years ago, back in the dark days of yore, when it finally got to the point where at least one time-out was called. It used to be certain topics that attracted the trolling. Lately it's been rather endemic.

My humble suggestion is that you and I quit feeding the trolls. Trolling behavior is not good for the troll, nor is it good or healthy for those who engage them. I confess that I have gotten sucked in to responding a few times lately and, in doing so, have contributed to the overall deterioration of our discussions. For that, I apologize, and my intent is to refrain from responding to trolling when I see it.

I hope that you will join me in not feeding the trolls.

The ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ invites you to read and evaluate the "Draft of a Social Statement on Women and Justice."

The statement, including glossary and notes, runs about 60 pages. I've attached the PDF for your convenience. Hold onto your hats.

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
And now, for something completely different . . .
