Your Turn / Farewell

Dear friends,

I believe the time has come to sign out from my social media platforms.   My cancer has progressed to the point that my family is making me aware that my mental capacity might be declining to the point where I might make Joe Biden look like he's at the top of his game.  God forbid that I would in anyway imply that the President of the United States of America is in anyway capable of holding his office, so it must be time to quit.

For me, the issues that concern me at this time are not so much the theological debates within the LCMS or between ELS and WELS.  The time is quickly approaching for me that such designations will no longer have any meaning at all.  We will be in heaven enjoying the beautiful face of our Creator and Lord Jesus Christ and enjoying all the things He has so graciously purchased for us with His very body and blood.  As I contemplate being in heaven, I must marvel at the man that I will finally become.  You know, the man that God created to be perfect and godly in every way.  I marvel that having human relationships untainted with sin, and temptation.  Truly, it is beyond my imagination or comprehension.  My prayers at night are that God might choose to take me home.  Perhaps God has a better idea that there's a good reason for waiting around longer and if so, then I certainly yield to His divine will, but for my money, this waiting game can be over any time for me. 

The worlds of Scripture Psalm 119:94, "I am yours, save me," have become my words along with those of the tax collector, "9 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be [d]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." (Luke 9-18)


As for the earthly political debacle we are now witnessing in this nation.  All I can do is pray that God will raise up people who have the courage to tell the government to return to a Constitution bases our forefathers in great wisdom created.  Hopefully that can be accomplished by political means, but it not, then real, traditional Americans need to reread that portion of our Declaration of Independence, "That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the Governed, that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to instituted new government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form , as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness."

If this means by force of arms, then so be it! Since the Declaration of Independence was the bases for the Constitution no law in my mind can override it.

As for me, soon these concerns will be no longer my focus ether.  God is the King of Heaven and no one shall overthrow Him!

It wasn't actually my intention to spawn a discussion on interim pastorates, but to point out the interference of some DPs. Who wrongly insert themselves into the congregation's calling process or who attempts to place either a interim or vacancy pastor in order to change the nature of the congregation.

Might it be possible that some districts serve as a bit of a bottleneck to the calling process?  From my observation it seems that some districts believe that when a congregational vacancy occurs, that the district is in charge of the calling process, not the calling congregation.  In other places some see the calling process of filling a vacancy as an opportunity to change the character of a congregation  from the biblical model of feeding the sheep on the pure Word of God and the right administration of the Sacraments, into the more Church-Growthy idea of a mission "out-post" restructuring the congregation from the ground up to focus almost solely on evangelism.

So some districts require "self-studies" (often designed to help the congregation question the time-honored values of the historic liturgies and the biblical model of shepherd and sheep.) Other DP's insist that they have every right to insert or illuminate candidate names from congregational call lists even if those eliminated are pastors in good-standing.  That, in my opinion, is an unbiblical intrusion into the congregation's call process for any such action.

Then there is the matter of PIF's and DP evaluations.  Many, if not most, DP evaluations are simply based on here-say in my experience.  In over 36 years of serving as an LCMS pastor I have never once been observed by a DP as I preached, taught a class, conducted an Elders or Voter's meeting.  So on what is this judgement being based?  Here-say.  PIF's are at best self-serving and may or may not be accurate.

Some DP's use the withholding of candidate information from the calling congregations for names the congregation submitted if they don't care for the individual or his theological/political positions.  This isn't your job! 

On one occasion (after I retired) the congregation in which I was a member wanted to extend a call to me to be "Assistant Pastor - Emeritus" so that I could validly preach the Word and administer the Sacraments both in my own congregation and in neighboring congregation without violation of Augustana XIV.  The district threatened to withhold certification and District representation for the installation.  When we informed them that the congregation had every right to call a pastor in good-standing and would proceed with the installation with or without their participation, they suddenly realized they had no theological ground on which to deny a rightly called servant and would be stuck with me as a pastor in that congregation and thus they sent the circuit visitor as the district's representative.

I would maintain that it is entirely possible to obtain more information on a candidate from the website of the congregation he is currently serving than you ever will from a PIF or DP evaluation.  It's not hard for a congregation to garner information on a candidate.

I have often told calling congregations that if they jump through every district required "hoop" in the district's "requirements" that they might as well plan on having a vacancy lasting between 9-12 months.  That is unhealthy for all but the most extreme cases.  Don't even get me started in the "Interim Pastor" model which is merely yet another intrusion of a business model on the church.

  Most of us were taught by our Christian parents to say our prayers at bedtime, at meals, and at church. As we grow older, some begin to consider prayer as something belonging to their childhood but not so much for adults. When your doctor tells you that you are going to die whether the cause be cancer (as it is in my case), heart disease, an injury from which recovery is not possible, or any of any number of diseases that afflict humanity, prayer is often restored to its proper place. Prayer is communication with God. The Bible assures us that God both hears and answers our prayers, because He has promised to do so, and God can never go back on His Word.

For the dying, prayer becomes a real lifeline to God. Not only does prayer permit us to address our specific needs, but prayer also allows us to receive the comfort of knowing that the Creator of the universe is listening and will respond according to our needs. He alone knows that what we need may be more beneficial to us than what we want.

This booklet is intended for those who know they are dying. It is hoped that the thoughts contained, and the examples of prayers offered will provide assurance to those who have lost faith that faith can still save you. If you've lost confidence that prayer is effective and that God is actually listening to His children when they pray, then this booklet may help restore the confidence you had when you were a child.

There is a day coming for every last one of us when death and dying will become a reality for us. Death itself, should be a longed-for event that will become, as the Scripture promises, our very best birthday ever!

Madness of sin and false teaching has no bottom. It will continue to sink its deepest hole ever deeper. Such a simple thing God has made: male and female. It is no mystery nor secret. Any fool with a set of eyes can discern the difference in both appearance and function. But today's Wokenistas refuse to see any such reality. They have grown to hate what God has made and to reject the obvious. It is merely one more tool in the Marxist "box" of tricks to divide us into oppressor or oppressed.

The time is coming when, by force of law, the insanity will be enforced on all of us whether we like it or not. We will be forced to play along with this madness or we will be punished. How long before traditional Christian parents have their children taken away from them by the state for alleged "hate" crimes of teaching their own children the biblical view of human sexuality? It is coming more quickly than you think.

This isn't really just about a stupid sermon.  It is about the nature of sin and falsehood.

When that time comes, what will we traditional Christians do? Will we stand quietly by while our children and grandchildren are loaded into Child Protective Services vans and driven away never to be seen again? Or will we fight for our children? Will well stand up against our own government if needed to retain our freedom of religion, our freedom/duty to raise our children in a godly way? What will we do on that day?

Just something to think about:  Only 49% of the products originating from the petroleum industry are gasoline.  Where are you going to find other ingredients for things like medicine, cosmetics, plastics, and about 200 other everyday products that originate from oil?

I managed to feel well enough to attend Thanksgiving Eve service last night our Our Savior, Pagosa Springs and I am blessed to have been there. Of course, the Gospel reading was on the Nine Lepers who approached Jesus seeking healing but with only one returning to give thanks.  Naturally, the only question that requires an answer on a Thanksgiving Eve service was, "What Are You Thankful For?"  We were blessed to have it preached by a vicar who is serving a congregation in Billings, Montana, but who was visiting family here.  This young man will make a fine pastor as was evident with his expertise in grappling with the Gospel text.  The Vicar talked a good deal about thanksgiving in the face of suffering...kinda right down my "alley" a this point in my life. He made the point that what was Jesus who should be for focus of our thankfulness since He is our Savior not only from sin and death, but also He comes to bring an ultimate end to every disease and other result of living in our sinful estate.

I keep praying for God to have patience with me and to teach me to learn from this suffering (which is beginning in earnest at this point in the process), but most of all, I pray that He will lead me through all of this to love and trust Him more and more.  In the end, while healing would be nice, what I need is the forgiveness of sins and the assurance of life forever with Him in heaven.  God grant it for Jesus' sake!

No one is saying that we shouldn't take care of the land that God has made us stewards.  Since sin entered the world at the beginning it is also the environment that suffers.  The Green New Deal's problem is that it solves no environmental problem and does not affect the temperature of the world at all.  It is a Marxist sham.

Rolf is quite correct that the so-called Climate Change movement is all about the Marxist redistribution of wealth.  Perhaps the biggest sick joke about it all is that the world's single worst polluter, China, is exempt from making climate payments to other less developed nations is that they managed to get themselves declared as a "developing" nation so places like the USA and others are sending Climate Change money to China so they can continue to "develop" their high tech military.

SriLanka and Nigeria have been nearly financially ruined by adopting the green policies and other nations are struggling as well.

I am reasonably certain that Scripture tells us that that this world will not end until our Lord Returns for the Day of Judgment.
